First-Time Manager Secrets!
Managing people in the workplace doesn’t always come naturally, and the lack of formal training often deters many from stepping into management roles.
According to Gallup research, less than half (48%) of managers strongly agree they have the skills necessary to excel in their roles.
Christine Cruzvergara, now the Chief Education Strategy Officer at Handshake, stepped into her first managerial role as an assistant director at a university in 2011, leading a team with members significantly more senior than her. Through her experiences, she identified three key strategies that can help first-time managers succeed.

1. Learn from Previous Bosses

Reflecting on past experiences with former managers can provide valuable insights into effective leadership styles. Think about what you appreciated or disliked about their approaches.
For example, a good manager might have been genuinely interested in your growth, receptive to feedback, and supportive of your success. Consider how they set expectations, communicated effectively, and fostered a positive work environment. If possible, reach out to them for insights into their strategies.

2. Identify Strengths and Weaknesses

Effective management begins with self-awareness. Build a leadership style that aligns with your strengths and addresses areas for improvement.
For example, Cruzvergara identified her strengths as being direct and adaptable to others’ working styles. To quickly connect with her team, she developed a strategy of asking new team members five key questions during their first formal one-on-one meeting. This approach fast-tracked relationship-building and set the tone for a productive working dynamic.

3. Build a Network of Peer Managers

If you lack access to a supportive supervisor, building a network of colleagues in similar roles can be invaluable. These connections provide a sounding board for advice, guidance, and sharing experiences.
Cruzvergara found this approach particularly helpful in her early management days, relying on her network as a neutral third party for advice and support. This strategy allowed her to cultivate strong relationships and gain diverse perspectives on leadership challenges.
